Darwin’s Natural Pet Products Places Profit Over Safety

09/23/2024

In circumstances repetitive of previous episodes dating back to 2018 and more recently in October 2023, FDA has isolated both Salmonella and Listeria from raw cat and dog foods produced by Arrow Reliance, Inc. under the Darwin’s Natural Pet Products brand.  In 2023, the company refused to recall affected batches following demonstration of Salmonella in product.  A year later, the Company responsible for the brand, has reacted in a similar way and has declined to recall products.  Accordingly, the FDA has issued a public warning.

Contamination of pet food with pathogens that impact both animals and humans and will result in infection and colonization of the intestinal tract of pets leading to intermittent shedding to other pets, household members and especially children.  Feeding raw food to pets is undesirable and is the subject of a warning by the American Veterinary Medical Association based on risks to both animals and their owners.

Should any litigation arise from consumption of contaminated pet food, the Company will be held liable and in this instance will face both direct and punitive damages.

The FDA should exercise its authority and follow procedures to initiate a mandatory recall of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products. These are distributed directly to consumers who may not be aware of the consequences of feeding products, determined by the FDA to be adulterated by pathogen contamination and non-approved inclusion of peroxyacetic acid. The Company will face consumer lawsuits that will inevitably result in adverse verdicts against the Company with substantial direct and punitive damages especially should a child be infected with a Salmonella strain derived from the adulterated pet food.
