During the week ending September 7th, two cases of H3N2v infection were confirmed in patients under the age of 18. Both attended an agricultural fair independently with one having indirect contact and the second direct contact with hogs.
Investigations failed to detect transmission to other members of the household. In one case, diagnosis was complicated by a concurrent infection with SARS-CoV-2 virus that initially created concern over contagion. Both patients recovered without requiring hospitalization. The ProMED report documentation of nine variant influenza cases in 2024 to date, involving either H3 or H1 influenza virus contracted from hogs.
