SE Impacts NSW, Australian Farms

A wholesale distributor, the Egg Basket, has recalled a range of eggs potentially contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis (SE). According to the Weekly Times June 16th edition, this is the seventh recall attributed to SE. Authorities have identified eleven farms in New South Wales infected with SE and the State Food Authority has “increased surveillance and monitoring” in addition the Authority has provided appropriate advice to consumers to thoroughly cook eggs.

It is noted that over the past decade, Australia has undergone a transition from conventional cage housing to free-range systems. This will complicate decontamination and possibly prevent eradication of infection on the farms concerned.
