Director-General of FAO Elected

Qu Dongyu currently Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China has been elected the 9th Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (UN-FAO)

Qu will succeed Jose Graziano da Silva on August 1st 2019 and his term of office will extend to July 2023.

Qu was not the favored candidate of the U.S. but he received 108 votes out of 191 cast at the 41st session of the most recent FAO conference.

China has been aggressive in placing their nationals in high visibility positions in international agencies. Meng Hongwei served as Director of Interpol from 2016 until 2018 when he was recalled to face charges of bribery committed during his tenure as Vice Minister of Public Security.
