Cyclospora Outbreak in Upper New York State

The New York State Department of Health has diagnosed eleven laboratory-confirmed cases of Cyclospora infection acquired from various restaurants, a college and a senior-living community center.

No specific deficiencies in food handling or preparation were observed at any of the implicated kitchens and as with previous outbreaks contaminated fresh produce is considered to be the vehicle of infection.

Cyclospora cayetanensis is an emerging pathogen responsible for diarrhea and other symptoms expected with an intestinal infection of a week in duration. For subscribers unfamiliar with the condition it is roughly analogous to mild coccidiosis in chickens—now you know!
