Administration Pressing for Ratification of USMCA

The White House is activating a full-court press to achieve ratification of the USMCA by September. This follows approval of the agreement by the Congress of Mexico in June.

White House Economic Advisor Larry Kudlow has emphasized the benefits of the USMCA with respect to job creation and adding a projected 0.5 percent to the GNP. Quoted by Reuters, Kudlow stated “I am optimistic that we have a very good chance of getting that through, given the cooperation and accommodation of the House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi in resolving disagreements”.

Richard Neal, chair of the House Ways and Means Committee has had successful discussions with Robert Lighthizer, U.S. Trade Representative. Democratic representatives are requesting stricter enforcement of labor and environmental provisions. Republican members of the House have expressed disappointment that the USMCA has not been ratified.
