Kroger Initiative to Reduce Food Waste

The Kroger Company has requested the EPA to establish standards to reduce food wastage. There is reluctance on the part of the EPA to become involved in mandating standards. Administrator, Andrew Wheeler stated “If the industry themselves can come up with a program to standardize best-by dates for example then there is no need for the federal government to intervene”.

According to a posting on Bloomberg, Jessica Adelman, Chief Social Impact Officer for Kroger explained the strategy of her company with regard to conservation. As food products age, they are marked down and if not sold are then donated to food banks. Products unsuitable for human consumption are processed into animal feed or are composted, limiting consignment to landfills. Kroger recognizes the need for both equipment and technology to increase composting of biodegradable material.
