South Australia to Eliminate Ban on GMO Cultivars

The Government of South Australia will lift the moratorium on genetically modified food crops. Cultivars will however be imported under quarantine to offshore Kangaroo Island.

The action taken by the Government of South Australia followed the Anderson Review that showed that farmers in South Australia were at a disadvantage when deprived of the benefits relating to cultivation of GMO crops. Tim Whetstone, Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development for the Government of South Australia stated “Considering the future economic impact on farmers, it is time to lift the moratorium on the mainland and provide farmers choice on crops they seek to grow”.
