Uncertainty Over EPA Refinery Waivers

The Cabinet has decided to retain biofuel waivers granted to 31 small (and some not so small) refineries. Secretary of Agriculture Dr. Sonny Perdue had requested revocation of waivers especially for those refineries tied to multinational oil companies.

Although politically popular, the EPA noted that cancellation action would be illegal. The decision to grant waivers by EPA has created a rift between the Department of Agriculture, representing farmers and other Federal agencies.

Previously EGG-NEWS reported that Poet has idled plant in the Midwest following release of the waivers that have reduced the domestic market for ethanol.

Both Secretary Perdue and the White House have announced that they are working on a compromise plan, but as yet, there has been no release of concepts that will influence future policy on the RFS and waivers.
