Nine days from Government Shutdown
With the rejection of H.R. 9494, an omnibus appropriations bill by a 220 to 202 vote margin, Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson (R-LA) will have to revert to Plan B, if there is one, to keep the entire government functioning on October 1st. Passage of necessary legislation is impeded by opposition from 14 members of his right flank and the House minority party. Previous postings (retrievable by entering ‘Government Shutdown’ in the SEARCH block) describe the consequences of failure to extend the series of continuing resolutions. This is no way to run our Country. What happened to hard negotiation and ultimate compromise? Where are the politicians of past Congresses who bargained in good faith for the wellbeing of our Nation? Disruption and chaos that may seem politically expedient at a point in time cause hardship and devalue our creditworthiness. Let us hope for resolution in the coming week.
