Following recent reports of cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza in eastern Europe the Czech Republic has reported outbreak on a goose farm in the town of Martiniceu-Breznice in central Bohemia. The case indicates that migratory birds are transmitting avian influenza virus with free-range flocks especially vulnerable. In past seasons characterized by a high incidence rate, veterinary authorities have mandated enclosing flocks.
The inevitability of reoccurring HPAI infection among flocks in France producing foie gras led to an extensive vaccination program in 2023. The success of prevention justified extension of vaccination into 2024.
