People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have criticized the Humane Society of the United States for their promotion of the Global Animal Partnership. Basically, PETA is opposed to all forms of intensive livestock production and ultimately all consumption of farm-raised animals since the group promotes a vegan agenda.
There is also a commercial component to the conflict, since HSUS benefits from fees imposed to award GAP certification that presumably provides a marketing advantage. The situation detracts from fund raising by PETA as more reasonable but concerned consumers accept the welfare benefits associated with GAP certification to the detriment of support for PETA extremism.
