USDA is making available $5.7 billion in funding through the Electric Infrastructure Loan Program to improve power distribution in 23 states. Projects will include new lines, conversion to Smart-Grid technology to connect consumers currently deprived of the availability of reliable power.
The incentive is reminiscent of the electrification programs introduced by the Tennessee Valley Authority as part of the New Deal under the Administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Rural electrification along with broad-band access improves the quality of life and productivity of rural residents.
