H5 LPAI Diagnosed in Breeder Ducks

A diagnosis of H5 low-pathogenic avian influenza was reported to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) by USDA-APHIS. The affected farm is in Monterey County, California.

An epidemiologic investigation is in progress to determine the source of infection.  In addition to the farm that housed 9,500 breeder ducks, two biologically contiguous farms were also placed under quarantine and have been sampled for the presence of AI virus.

The disposition of the flock is unknown but if quarantine can be maintained, the flock should cease shedding virus within a month and will thereafter be noninfectious although expressing H5 antibody.
