Progress on Ratifying USMCA

The Senate of Mexico ratified the USMCA signed in September 2018 following the June 7th agreement between the U.S. and Mexico concerning migrants.

On June 20th, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada met with President Trump to discuss ratification. The U.S. Senate is set to fast-track the trade deal, but there will be a delay in approval by the House. Trudeau met with both the Speaker of the House and the U.S. Senate Majority Leader during his visit to Washington. At issue are concerns by the Democratic Party majority in the House concerning environmental standards and protection for labor.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has appointed a number of House Democrats to work with officials at the United States Trade Representative to resolve outstanding issues.

Trade organizations including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce along with other lobbying groups are pressing for rapid passage, hopefully before the August recess.
