Organic Milk Recalled in New York State

Pelleh Farms located in Swan Lake, NY has recalled Bethel Creamery Brand USDA Certified Whole Organic Milk.

Investigations revealed that the designated batches of milk were not effectively pasteurized.  Heating to 161 F for 15 seconds will destroy vegetative forms of bacteria in milk including the agents responsible for tuberculosis and brucellosis (rare in modern U.S. dairy herds), but also Salmonella, E.coli Campylobacter and Listeria which are becoming more frequently associated with milkborne infections from raw milk.

This case again confirms that the USDA Certified Organic seal relates to production practices with certification involving a review of paperwork.  The USDA Certified Organic seal does not address the issues of quality or food safety.
